For those staying in the north or west, you can consider checking Kuai San Dim Sum (块三点心)!
块三点心 sells cheap and an average dim sum that is much cheaper at what you pay at other dining places. As the stall’s name translates from Mandarin, it means $1.30 dim sum. It is literally everything at $1.30 each. Nowadays where to find such a reasonable price dim sum. For this price, we might only find it in JB. Not only cheap, but it operates 24 hours daily at the Woodlands outlet. It will be another place you can go for supper to fix your hungry tummy.
There are 33 items to choose from their menu. But you can find the usual delights like char siew pau, chicken feet, prawn dumpling, Siew Mai, Prawn Dumpling, Carrot Cake, and even Century Egg Pork Porridge. Sad to say they did not carry Egg Tart and BBQ Pork Puff.
When we were there for the dim sum, they are making the carrot cake on the spot. Hence, I guess their dim sum are handmade. As the name translated from Mandarin, it means handmade dim sum.
We ordered 9 different dishes to try.
Kuai San Dim Sum Verdict
I love siew mai and it was good, not much of fatty meat. Unlike the prawn dumpling, I find the skin on the thick side but you can taste the prawn. The chicken feet was tender and a tad of a spicy taste. Carrot cake had a crisp exterior and is chewy insides. Chicken glutinous rice was ok although there was few uncooked rice. While the char siew pau and prawn dumpling were average only. Perhaps it was cold when I tasted it.
I think you can skip the pork ribs as I find it on the salty side and the meat was the fatty kind.
Lastly, if you want a quick and cheap breakfast, go for the Century Egg Pork Porridge. We saw a few customers ordering a bowl of porridge and another dish to go along as breakfast. For $1.30, they are generous as the serving was not in a normal small rice bowl. In addition, there were visible meat slices. On the whole, the porridge is tasty and flavourful.
Conclusion
Overall, for $1.30 Dim Sum, you can’t expect too much. Please don’t go there with high expectation and expect the foods were extremely favourable. If you are around Woodlands or Lakeside and looking for something cheap and decent to fill your stomach, Kuai San Dian Xin is a good choice. However, if you are looking for presentation and fantastic taste, this might not be suitable for you.
Personally, I love the siew mai and porridge the most. I don’t mind going back again given the price. The taste of the food is acceptable to us. At $11.70 for 9 dishes, you can’t ask for more.
